Tears threatened to fall as I read the note. I had never known the woman who’d borne me. In nineteen years, all I had learned of my mother’s past came from second-hand information. Yet in my mind, the wonderful yet flawed woman could be some fictional character in a novel I had read. This note proved Cherie had existed and that she’d cared for me.

“Mere,” the French term for mother fell from my lips as I dove my hand back into the depths of the chest. Another ragged piece of parchment lay at the bottom. With eager hands I turned it over and my breath caught.
